As was expected, after the announcement of Tron Legacy‘s release date on December 17, 2010, The Smurfs movie is the first to say adios to their scheduled release.
Sony has announced that they are moving the new Smurfs movie to Summer 2011, tentatively July 29, 2011. This was an expected move on their part, since they would’ve had stiff competition at the original date with Tron Legacy, Green Hornet and a Yogi Bear movie all in the works for that same day.
Walt Disney Pictures has set the date for Tron Legacy to debut in screens in the U.S.
December 17, 2010 is officially the day we’ll get to see Tron Legacy. As of now, it pits it against several high-profile movies, which include The Green Hornet, The Smurfs and Yogi Bear.
Probably sometime soon there will be an announcement from at least one of those three films saying they’ll move their release date, since Tron Legacy could very well hit the same target audience for all of them, especially Green Hornet.
Disney has confirmed that british actor Michael Sheen (who’s portrayed famous “real” people before in The Queen and Frost/Nixon) will be playing the villain in the upcoming Tron Legacy.
Sheen describes his character as “not a person at all“, so we’ll see how his character will come about later on.
Tron Legacy news just keeps coming and coming after the big reveal this past week at Comic-Con.
Disney kicked off the very first 3D panel at San Diego Comic Con International with presentations from their upcoming digital 3D films. They went in order of how they’ll be released, starting with Robert Zemeckis’s “A Christmas Carol“.
This film, starring Jim Carrey in 8 different characters, will be nothing new to Zemeckis, it’s his followup to 2007′s “Beowulf“, a motion capture extravaganza presented in digital 3D. In the panel, moderated by Ratatouille‘s Patton Oswalt, Zemeckis continued his admiration of the technology he’s been using since “The Polar Express“, and in a Q&A session where he was asked about a possible sequel to his 80′s hit “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?“, he just replied he wouldn’t confirm or deny that it’s going to happen, but if it does, that the 2D characters would continue being 2D as it was in the original film.
The second part of Disney’s presentation brought Tim Burton to his first ever Comic Con appearence. They showed a trailer almost identical to the one that was released yesterday, but according to descriptions, it was edited differently, this time with a soundtrack of MGMT‘s “Time to Pretend“. Afterwards in the Q&A session, Burton mentioned that the story in this film is based on all of Lewis Carroll’s work, not just the “Alice” novel. The panel ended with him bringing out his “immaginary friend”, Johnny Depp, and announcing that his next project will be yet again with Depp, an adaptation of the cult tv series “Dark Shadows“.
The third section was dedicated to “Tron Legacy” (click the image for a larger version), which is apparently the title the sequel is getting. They just finished shooting a scene in Vancouver last week, and they quickly cut it, where Sean Flynn goes into the old Flynn Arcade and sees the original Tron arcade video game. They also showed concept art for the interior of the computer system, an updated disc wars image, designs for the new light cycles and the 2-person lightrunner, and other random stuff. Also of note, they mentioned that Daft Punk has already composed 24 tracks for the soundtrack Nothing that big from the Tron panel this year.
And that’s it for now… more Comic Con info to come, for sure.
Disney’s Tron 2 is starting to come to life, and it’s obviously starting online.
Gearing up for the big press conference this Thursday at San Diego’s Comic Con International, Disney has set up 2 websites linked to the highly anticipated sequel. The first is “Home of Tron“, with information on “Flynn’s Arcade“, and “Flynn Lives“, a conspiracy site dedicated to find the missing Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), which has a hidden page with a countdown we believe is to the big announcement at Comic Con.
The big presentation will be part of the first ever 3D extravaganza at Comic Con, which will include sneak peaks at Tron 2, along with Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.
UPDATE: the countdown as of 8:20pm EDT on July 23, 2009, is still running, scheduled to go to zero at 12:30am EDT tonight, and the Comic Con panel has already passed, so we’ll stay tuned to see what the countdown is for and update as soon as we know.
